Green Flag

Scoil an Chroí Naofa are proud to be part of An Táisce’s Green School Programme. To date we have achieved 4 Green Flag Awards in the areas of Litter & Waste, Energy, Water and Travel. In order to achieve a Green Flag Award the school community must commit to implementing a new theme over a two year period. A Green Schools Committee, consisting of children representing each of the class bands, has been established in our school. The committee, in conjunction with the Green Schools coordinator, decides what needs to be done and involves the rest of the school community in implementing our plans. At the end of the two years, a member of An Táisce visits the school. They meet with the Green Schools Coordinator, Green Schools Committee and with a few classes whom they pick at random on the day. They assess the plans that have been drawn up and implemented over the agreed time frame. They also interview the committee based on the work that has been done in the school. If they are satisfied with our work the school is then presented with a Green Flag Award. In June 2010 we were delighted to receive our new Green Flag for Travel. Galway hurler Ollie Canning was our guest of honour on the day and raised our new flag for us. It is flying proudly at the entrance to Scoil an Chroí Naofa. In September 2010 we began our journey towards achieving our 5th Green Flag Award based on the theme ‘Biodiversity’. We hope that with a lot of hard work and commitment from everyone in our school, we can keep Scoil an Chroí Naofa a Green School and achieve our 5th Green Flag Award.

Drama in Scoil an Chroi Naofa

Drama and the arts play an important role in life at Scoil an Chroi Naofa. We enjoy performances from various classes at Christmas and at summer. Every child in Scoil an Chroi Naofa has an opportunity to perform on stage or be part of the back stage crew; thus boosting self confidence and attaining a huge amount of joy from the experience.
This Christmas we all enjoyed “The Nativity” performed by junior infants, “The Missing Christmas Trees” performed by 2nd class and some children from the Rainbow room and “A Substitute for Santa Claus” performed by 6th class and the senior language class.
We are really looking forward to our summer performances!!

School Choir

“A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”

Scoil an Chroí Naofa’s choir was established in 1998. Since then our school choir continues to perform for many school and community concerts as well as liturgical events. We have taken part in the Hallelujah Christmas Concert from 1999 - 2002 which was staged in the then Point Depot now the O2. We have performed in local choral events most notably the Mid West Choir Fest in which we received a runner up prize for the large school choir category in 2004. Our choir’s involvement with The National Children’s Choir began in 2003 and this year sees us busily preparing for the regional concert which will be held in Athlone IT on April 13th with nine children from our choir then being selected to perform in the National Concert Hall during the weekend of May 28th – May 30th. This year’s choir of seventy pupils from fifth and sixth class is under the direction of Edel Moriarty, Christine McLoughlin, Teresa Finnerty and Carol Kilcoyne.
