Miss Heery, who worked as a Junior Infant teacher for two years in Scoil an Chroí Naofa is currently working as a VSO Volunteer in Ghana, Africa. Miss Heery is living in an area of Nothern Ghana called Nandom. Nandom is a small, rural village with a low population. As a VSO Volunteer Miss Heery is responsible for improving the quality, and relevance of education through teacher training. She travels between a number of schools providing In-Service training to local teachers, some of whom have no formal teacher training. Miss Heery is particularly involved in Literacy training. Her aim is to introduce modern teaching strategies and methods, which will improve the quality of teaching in the long term. Miss Heery has adapted very well to life in Ghana. She is very much a part of the community. She is learning the local dialect 'Dagaare' and has even become a valued member of the local church choir! The parents, staff and children of Scoil an Chroí Naofa continue to support Miss Heery in her fantastic work in Ghana. The school held a non-uniform day in 2008, and only recently the children of 5th/6th class helped to run a very successful Jumble Sale. The Jumble Sale was so successful that Mr.Rynne's class raised a massive €1,602.78. All this money will greatly benefit the children where Miss Heery is working.. The money will be spent on improving services, buying resources and equipment for all these children. Well done Miss Heery, keep up the good work! |
